History of Norway on Dipity.
There were several turning points in the history of Norway and are shown on the above timeline. Additionally, links have been added to each event to allow for further exploration on the topic. The first major historical turning point added was in 1397 when Denmark, Sweden, and Norway united under a single monarch. The three countries agreed to this union, known as the Union of Kalmar, in which Denmark was the dominant power. In 1523, Sweden declared itself independent and the Union collapsed. In 1536, Norway became a Danish province. In 1814, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden. This created an uprising, as Norway wanted to be independent. During this time, the Norwegian Constitution was written modeled after the American Declaration of Independence. As Sweden was able to put down the uprising, they did agree to recognize Norway’s Constitution. In 1905, the union with Sweden disintegrated. Norway then finally become an independent kingdom. They crowned the Danish Prince Karl as King Haakon VII of Norway. In April of 1940, Germany invaded the ports of Norway. For two months the Norwegians were able to hold off the Nazi’s. However, by June, the royal family had fled to Britain and Vidkun Quisling proclaimed himself the head of the government of Norway. Due to continuous widespread resistance and acts of sabotage against the government, martial law was introduced in 1941. At the end of World War II, when German forces surrendered, the King returned to Norway and Quisling was tried and executed for treason. This marked the beginning of reconstruction. The last and most recent date you will find on the above timeline is the discovery of oil in the late 1960’s. Oil and gas deposits were discovered in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. This discovery provided a huge boost to the economy. By the 1980’s gas and oil constituted nearly 1/3 of Norway’s annual export earnings.
